I like your first variant more:

    g

I don't like the tranparent arrow and the "dog-ear" style
    from the new variant.

    Just my 2 cents. ;-)

I think there is something wrong with the icon file itself.
I tried it in MS Explorer and changed to view "Large Icons"
and "Small Icons" and it looks like it can't figure out
where to put the new icon. See the pictures I uploaded.

    I tested on Windows 2000 SP 4

By the way this belongs in the patch tracker and not in the
feature request tracker. I'll move it.

    Tim,
I re-downloaded this on my work computer and I am not having
the complications you displayed. Did you try doing a "sort
by type" to see if it corrects the problem?

Sorry, I meant to direct that question towards Christian.

What is the status of Tim's and Christian's objections? Do
we want these icons or not?

I do need to do some touch ups on the 16x16 icons. But
other than that, it's ready to go on my end. Just need the
    approval.

I like the icons, so I think we definitely want them.

But my concerns shown in the uploaded pictures are still
valid. I don't know much about the format of icons, so I'm
not sure what's wrong. I tried "Sort by type" like Alex
suggested, but the result is the same.

As I wrote, I like the first version more. The "dog-ear"
looks more Mircosoft Windows-like and the non transparent
arrow looks better on the smaller icons. But that is only
_MY_ opinion and I think the main developers should decide!
    ;-)

Tim, "dog-ear" is not really a Microsoft thing. Linux
(desktop), Mac, everyone does this. This is the best way to
distinctly show that it is a page without it being boring
and square. Even Adobe uses the so called dog-ear (page
curl) on all distributions and program icons that they
write. The issue at this point is that I put many many
hours into the design and after more than 12 straight
hours... I don't know if I have the energy to remake
everything for the first release. I am open to suggestions,
but some things should be said ahead of time so no time is
wasted on a failed design (just a future note.) We have
already discussed removing the translucency from the smaller
icons on the dev forums (I will be doing this, including
making it more clear that it is in fact an arrow.) I
haven't heard any negative critism on this design as of
yet... well until Tim came along ;) and gladly received.

Christian, I am going to save the icon set using 2 seperate
programs for compiling icon sets. Uncompress them both and
let me know which one or both causes the issue. File isn't
uploaded yet, but I will upload it tonight or in the morning.

    > Tim, "dog-ear" is not really a Microsoft thing.

Thanks, but I know this. *fg* I only thought that the icon
should use the dog-ear *style* that Windows use. In this
case the "triangular" and "folded" dog-ear. I like your
first version, because it looks fresher but has still a
(more or less) triangular dog-ear. The "rolled" dog-ear
looks a little bit unusual and I am not sure that I saw this
style on my Windows before. But maybe that's only a question
of getting used to it for me. ;-)
But that only my opinion and should NOT be a obstacle to use
    this otherwise cool icon!

    Greetings,
    Tim

Christian, I attached an Icon Test file. uncompress both
and see if the problem you have persists.

The problem has gone away. I don't know what you did
differently, but they both show up just fine now.

Alexander, what do you think if I apply current set to CVS
before making next experimental release (wednesday propably)?

  • Logged In: YES
    user_id=1463166

    Kimmo,
Go ahead and add to experimental. I will be doing an icon
touch up as stated below shortly. I finally finished the
512x512 version of the Icon so that it can be used to
replace the current "Arrow and Page" on the splash screen.
That way WinMerge will have icon, splash, and identity
    consistancy.
