No

After the 2.2 release, i want to submit WinMerge on
some german Freeware sites.
For this plan would be an "official" description really
useful. ;-)

Maybe somebody can write a good description for the
file "WinMergePAD.xml"?
(And there for <Char_Desc_450> and
<Char_Desc_2000> a longer description.)

The translators can maybe translate this description and
submit them also to the PAD file.

I think this could useful for all.

Tim

Oh, you were talking about updating description. Sorry I
misread and misunderstood this item at first.

Yes, it is about a updated description. It should include the
new features, and more text for the PAD elements
    <Char_Desc_450> and <Char_Desc_2000> (450 and 2000
    characters).
After that, we could translate the description to other
languages and make a multi-language PAD file.

    Current description:
"An Open Source visual text file differencing and merging tool
for Win32 platforms. It is highly useful for determing what has
changed between project versions, and then merging changes
between versions. Features include: diff / merge, directory
    comparison, directory recursion, Visual SourceSafe
integration, and a simple integrated editor. User interface
    translated to several languages."

I think it's a good idea to update the description and use all
the characters available. Please somebody do that!

But how do we make a multi-language PAD file?
As far as I understand from the PAD specification (
http://www.padspec.org/index.php ) it only supports english,
    or have I missed something?

    > But how do we make a multi-language PAD file?

    The <Program_Descriptions> part is multi-language:

    -------------------------8<-------------------------
    <Program_Descriptions>
    <English>
    <Keywords>diff,merge,text
    files,differencing,syncronize</Keywords>
    [...]
    </English>
    <German>
    [...]
    </German>
    </Program_Descriptions>

    Just some off-the-cuff attempts:

    45:

Compare and merge files or directories

    80:

Side-by-side difference display and merge, for files or
    directories

    250:

Windows visual difference display and merging, for both
files and directories, with built-in editor, supporting
8-bit, MBCS, and Unicode, directory recursion, Visual Source
Safe integration, available in many languages

Increasing priority, I agree we'll need updated description,
    current is for .1.7.x ?

Perry's first two are good ones.

For last one, I'm not sure about mentioning "8-bit, MBCS" in
it? Yes we support, but for most people its ANSI and
UNICODE. Directory recursion is also not worth mentioning.

    How about something like:
Windows visual difference display and merging, for both
files and directories with Unicode support. Flexible syntax
coloring editor. Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering
for filenames and lines. In-line difference visualisation
(word-diff). File map showing overall file differences
    (location pane).

That is, lets mention new, important and interesting
features not ones every other program has.

Kimmo, I like yours (I like the mention of syntax coloring
editor, and windows shell integration, and regexp filtering,
    and word-diff, and map).

For the longer descriptions we maybe keep the "WinMerge
    is ..." beginning?
And still mention "open source" (GPL) and the "windows
    platform"?

I don't know what would be better: continuous text
like "WinMerge is ... and include ..." or just to list the features?

Let me join in the fun here and come with my suggestions :-)
I think Perry's two short suggestions are good.
I think Tim is right that we should start with "WinMerge is"
when possible, but it already states elsewhere that it is an
open source windows tool, so that can be left out (this is just
    my opinion).
    I like Kimmo's suggestion for 250 characters except it's a little
too long and I don't like to use parentheses in a description
    like this.
Combining all of the above with a few things from the current
    text, here are my suggestions:

    45:

Compare and merge files or directories

    80:

WinMerge is side-by-side difference display and merge, for
    files or directories

    250:

WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging,
for both files and directories. Unicode support. Flexible syntax
coloring editor. Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering.
Side-by-side line diff and in-line word diff visualisation.

    450:

WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging,
for both files and directories. WinMerge has Unicode support,
Flexible syntax coloring editor, and Windows Shell integration.
Regexp filtering for filenames and lines. Side-by-side line
difference and in-line word difference visualisation. A file map
shows the overall file differences in a location pane. The user
interface is translated into several languages.

    2000:

WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging,
for both files and directories. It is highly useful for determing
what has changed between file versions, and then merging
those changes. WinMerge has Unicode support, Flexible
syntax coloring editor, Visual SourceSafe integration, and
Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering for filenames and
lines. Side-by-side line difference and in-line word difference
visualisation.A file map shows the overall file differences in a
location pane. The user interface is translated into several
    languages.

The 2000 one only has 561 characters, so there are still
    plenty of room for improvements.
The 450 one has 425 characters, so that is pretty close.
The 250 one has 249 characters, that can't get much better.
The 80 one has 80 characters, right on the dot.
The 45 one has 39 characters, I can't think of anything
meaningful to use the last 6 characters for.

Those are fine with me. :)

Yes, I didn't even count chars in my suggestion, and I added
parentheses so that somebody replaces them with better wording.

BTW, we should use these descriptions in web-page etc..

Yes, let's use these descriptions in various places. I'll
exchange the SourceForge description with the 250 character
    version.

    The current one is this:
A visual text file differencing and merging tool for Win32
platforms. Useful for determing what has changed between
project versions, and then merging changes between versions
