For a Python PDF toolkit, see:

Consider re-defining the problem. Instead of stripping the markup
from the data, try re-phrasing the problem as stripping the data
from the markup. If you chose to view your task in this way, then
you might want to look at things like htmllib in the Python
standard library and PyXML (see http://www.python.org/sigs/xml-sig).
