I'm about to buy a webcam and need to use it both on my GNU/Linux machine and on my Mac. It'll have to be a USB webcam, and seeing how poorly those support Mac OS X, it seems that macam is my best bet. So what would "you" recommend for a webcam arounf $50 (below $100)? - it should be supported by macam, obviously. - I should be able to buy it (you have no control over that, but I get all it means is that something mainstream is better). - it would be great if not only the driver works, but the vendor/manufacturer was supportive/helpful. Before I realized that Mac support was anything but a given, I was planning to buy a Logitech Communicate STX (actually I did buy it, got it to work on my GNU/Linux machine and only then realized it didn't work on my Mac and returned it). Reading this mailing list I saw that there's a (limited?) possibility of using code from spca5xx Linux driver (which does support the STX, tho I don't know how well), so maybe the STX could be "easily" supported as well? I'm a programmer so I could dig into it (as long as it's not too involved since I don't have that much time to sink into it). But it seems Logitech is fairly unhelpful w.r.t Free Software, so I would prefer to give my money to a more enlightened company if such a thing exists. Stefan |
