ah, ok, you had an "s" too much:

virtualmin backup-domains

anyway, I get this error message, which doesn't make much sense to me:

# virtualmin backup-domain --all-domains --all-virtualmin --all-features --newformat --dest ssh://root@remotehost.com:/root/transfer --onebyone
--onebyone option can only be used with remote backups

Yes, the result is the same. The virtualmin command is just a wrapper around the .pl commands.

I just see, that you use the format:

virtualmin backup-domains

is this synonym with directly calling

as the command you use gives me:

# virtualmin backup-domains
Command backup-domains.pl was not found

ah, you mean a safer way of upgrading the OS - now I got it :)

The restore process should support an OS change on the destination system. In fact, this is probably a safer way of upgrading rather than doing it on a machine with Virtualmin currently running.

thanks, very appreciated!

do you you have experience with this approach when I at the same time upgrade the underlying OS (here ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS) or should I avoid this scenario?

Assuming you want to bring across all global Virtualmin settings as well (like
plans and templates), the commands to use :

virtualmin backup-domains --all-domains --all-virtualmin --all-features --newformat --dest ssh://user:pass@newserver:/backup --onebyone

and then on the new machine, restore with :

virtualmin restore-domains --all-domains --all-features --all-virtualmin --source /backup
