Webmin doesn't look at the hostname though - instead it does a reverse DNS lookup of the IP the browser is connected to.  However, in cases like EC2 where that IP internal, it doesn't actually match the hostname the browser was using.

Using the hostname isn't reliable either, as many people have their hostname set to something that doesn't resolve, or a short name like "webserver" :-(

but why not, it's in /etc/hostname. and it know it afterwards also. the value after "hostname=" in miniserv.conf is the same as in /etc/hostname..

The problem is that webmin doesn't know the external hostname at install time, so this cant be done by default..

thanks, that's the solution and suddenly the redirection to https happens automatically! this should be default..

Another fix you can try is to edit /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf and add the line :

host=your.external.hostname

And then run /etc/webmin/restart . This will force that hostname to be used in the http to https redirect..

that's the first thing we do. /etc/hostname is up to date..

Hey, I have the same issue with new EC2 instances, you need to update your hostname permanently (Google your linux OS followed by "hostname") for example in Ubuntu you need to edit /etc/hostname then run "/etc/init.d/hostname.sh start"

Then you need to reboot the server, a restart of webmin for some reason doesn't do it. You also need to clear your browsers cache.
