To replicate:

  1. Create a filesystem backup
  2. Select remote backup by ssh and enter a username
  3. Webmin tries as root, resulting in a "man in the middle" error

Using version 1.660 On Ubuntu 12.04 Server

Output on failure (username an IP's censored')

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!

Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!

It is also possible that a host key has just been changed.

The fingerprint for the ECDSA key sent by the remote host is
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

    Please contact your system administrator.

Add correct host key in /root/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.

    Offending ECDSA key in /root/.ssh/known_hosts:1

    remove with: ssh-keygen -f "/root/.ssh/known_hosts" -R xx.xx.xx.xx

ECDSA host key for xx.xx.xx.xx has changed and you have requested strict checking.

    Host key verification failed.

tar: user@xx.xx.xx.xx\:/home/user/Backups/Sites/blog: Cannot open: Input/output error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Doesn't resolve the issue. If it were using the 'user' parameter, why would it be touching /root/.ssh/known_hosts? Deleting this just raises issues with my rsa key pair.

because webmin run as root. and connect to your ssh server using user 'user', if im not wrong, same like as root run this command

    scp backupfile user@xx.xx.xx.xx\:/home/user/Backups/Sites/blog

Indeed. That was just good old fashion incompetence on my part.

For future reference, I just resolved the error I was having. If you are using a non-root rsa key, just run

    sudo cp ~/.ssh/id_rsa /root/.ssh/
