Hi

I was wondering why my /etc backup was taking ages..

I found mail related files for each user in there which
were sometimes as big as the original /var/mail files.

I haven't had time to look at the code but presume
these must be working files...

If so how can they be 'refreshed'?

regards
d.

Those files are indexes used to speed up listing of users'
mailboxes. Even though they appear large, they are actually
'sparse' files with a lot of empty space in them that does
    not consume space on disk.
You can either skip them in your backups, or use a backup
program like tar or dump that can properly handle sparse files.

    thanks for that,

Just a thought - might it be better to put them in
    /var/webmin then rather than /etc ?

In retrospect, I agree that /var/webmin would be better ..
but it is too late to move them now, as this would force a
re-generation of the indexes when users upgrade.
