Ian and I have agreed on a strategy for merging pdf1d, vpdfl, and bsta
into a single library that meets everyones needs. The aim is to build
the library for inclusion in VXL core. A few questions remain: What
do we call it? And where do we build it?
For a name I am suggesting VPDL (for Vision Probability Distribution
Library). We already have a VPL (P for probability) and we already
have a VSL (S for statistics). We could use VDL (D for distribution),
but maybe that is a bit vague. Also 3-letter acronyms seem to
correspond to level 1 core libraries while 4-letter acronyms
correspond to level 2 (e.g. vidl, vgui). Maybe that's just
coincidence, but I don't see a reason to break the pattern now. This
new library will be built on top of vnl so it will be core level 2.
Any other name suggestions?
Where should we build the code? I'd like to get a minimal version of
the library in core as soon as possible and then port over the rest of
the functionality over time. However, I imagine starting a library
from scratch in core is discouraged. Should I just put this in brl
for now and move it later? It sound's like we will have people from 3
or 4 institutions collaborating to make the merger.

The name "VPDL" (Vision Probability Distribution Library) sounds good.
I see no objection to starting directly in core/vpdl; by having it not build automatically from core/CMakeLists.txt, no CVS users nor the dashboard will notice it's there.

Given your commitment to the work, you should be fine to put it directly
in core. Just don't commit the changes to the core/CMakeLists.txt (or
anything else that references it) until it is working.

Alright, I will start contributing my design to core/vpdl. I will not
commit any changes to core/CMakeLists.txt until a substantial amount
of the code is ready.
