Ok it's done. Can you initiate a build command with the new updates and comfirm whether it breaks the build or not?

Why not just use FindMFC, and if it fails, assume no ATL. If you really need the location, perhaps you could assume that Visual Studio always puts MFC and ATL in the same relative locations, and use a regexp to map from one to the other.
