Thanks for sharing this!  I know there are some other VuFind users interested in CAS, so I'll make sure they are aware of this patch.  Please let me know when you think it is mature enough for inclusion in the trunk and I'll give it a closer review myself - I can't test it here, but I can at least offer general suggestions based on a look at the code.

we have implemented a CAS authentication system for VUFIND 1.1.

In ours machines vufind is working with CAS 3.4
This solution is a beta.
Any test is welcome.
