Sure, that's not what I wanted to say (though in the end it all depends on individuals). I just wanted to point to a project that is already addressing exactly the things we are talking about. In a clever way, I think. So we don't need another project, if there is an existing one we may join. I know Ross already promoted use of Jangle in VuFind and there is a VuFind implementation using Jangle now (see Luke Osullivan's mail yesterday). I'd like to see (more) library system vendors supporting Jangle (or at least any kind of usable, unrestricted interface), but I seems that won't happen soon (just talked about that with a library system vendor who clearly expressed unwillingness to provide any usable interface, though that would help themselves to integrate their own proprietary discovery interface with their ILSes, the current solution to access ILS functions from that DI is adventerous at best...). > Because, ultimately, I think the discovery system is the carrot that leads to development. If my goal is to implement VUFind, then I have no real motivation to work on Jangle. That doesn't get me any closer to rolling out VUFind. VuFind with a stable interface to your ILS may save you many headaches in the future. So it may not help you rolling it out quickly, but it may help you a lot maintaining it... > But if VUFind adopted Jangle, now I (and many others) have a motivation to work on Jangle. I think Jangle support in VuFind is on its way. Ross and Luke are working on it to hook up VuFind with Talis Alto, as far as I understand from some rumors (eg http://twitter.com/L_OS_Cymru/statuses/8548035392). At least it always is done by individuals... Till |
