Hi Alan,
Based on our research, feedback we got here, and our sys admin the issue is how much memory 32 bit RHEL6 can allocate to an application, with the upper limit around 2500m+, which is what corroborated when we try to up the heap space for vufind. Apparently, there are kernel settings that could change this but since we expect to eventually be at least close to the index size that would necessitate running a 64 bit OS we decided to go ahead with that rather than make adjustments to the kernel. 

We are running OpenJDK.
