Was about to ask the exact same question. http://vufind.org/jira/browse/VUFIND-590 reflects something that I also been wanting to patch before going live (in the TODO list).

Do you just control if the user is logged in (something like:

{if !$user}
      <a href="MyResearch/Homelogin" class="login" onClick="getLightbox(' .....

) or beside that you use user's (sorry about the redundancy) e-mail info (stored in his/her profile, "email" field in "user" MySQL's table, for instance) as an hidden "from"?

Are there any plans to contribute some of the modifications back

Especially the `sending email only as authenticated user' is something
really useful; the problem has recently brought up on JIRA
