It could be my imagination but it seems that VStar is more sluggish as of SVN 331. This was mentioned in another tracker, but it feels to be a bit worse now. This is most noticeable when working with data sets that are larger than the 2 years retrieved by default. The performance is an issue when plotting a chart and also when clicking on a data point to view the obs details. I'll see if I can figure out how to use the profile feature of my IDE to benchmark this. Perhaps we also need to include a Unit test that would perform an action on a certain (fixed) range of data and report the time to completion. This would help us understand which svn commits are degrading or enhancing performance.

Mediator held listener artefacts are another source of memory leaks. Change the Listener<T> interface to require a canRemove() method to be implemented. Objects like MenuBar will always return false, whereas chart and list panes will return true to permit removal before new star loading.

Look at these JVM command-line options.

Try that again. Try *these* JVM command-line options: -XX:+PrintCompilation -XX:-PrintGC
