Is it the floppy or the CD version you are using ?

There is a problem with the floppy version where it would
crash (and print 1 or 1 1/2 lines of garbage text on the
top of the screen), although VDMS 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 contain
a "workaround" specifically aimed at this problem with
DOTT. I was, however, able to run DOTT with VDMS 2.0.3 and
with the AdLib plugin module with SB for sound effects and
    AdLib for music.

If your game/computer just locks up (and you need to reboot
after), then make sure you are using the DirectSound output
modules (!). If AdLib and digital sound output are routed
via two WaveDevice.WaveOut instances, the first one there
(for DOTT, I suspect AdLib kicks in first) will
successfully open the device, while the second (for DOTT
that will be the "bang" sound during the spiral sequence,
when the Lucas copyright text pops up on the bottom) will
fail because the device was already opened by the first
instance (this is not a problem with the DSoundDevice
modules since they allocate secondary DirectSound buffers,
and you can have several secondary buffers opened from the
same process without any conflicts arising, unlike the
    wave).

For DOTT: you can always download the MT-32/GM patch from
the Lucas Arts site (under Yoda's Help Desk), and use GM
for music (much better quality than AdLib in general, and
much, much better quality than the beta AdLib
    implementation :) in particular).

The DirectSound modification has fixed all problems.
