hello, New subscriber, here. I am running OS X on an Intel Mac and want to run a guest of either Windows 2000 or XP. My goal is to get a USB universal device (ie, EPROM) programmer with Windows application working on my Mac. I understand that the pay-for (not open-source) version of the Oracle Vbox is the only product that supports USB devices. Is this true? Is the only option to install VBox and Windows resulting in a complete OS host environment? Or is there an option to install the Windows application be run "compartmentalized" (a la Wine)? What is the price for a license? I've scoured Oracle's site but cannot find pricing info. I've downloaded the VBox install from Oracle. Once installed, will it be full-functioning trial? How long does the trial last? Thanks, Dave C. |

Is this true? It's not pay-for. Its license is different but you can use it for free. ;) > I've downloaded the VBox install from Oracle. Once installed, will > it be full-functioning trial? I presume this will cost. (I welcome and appreciate that this forum is free and very helpful. But there are times when one wants a voice on a phone while running into issues...) More questions to follow ;-) Dave |

I presume this will cost. I'm positive it'd cost money ... as it should. :) I'd suggest calling your local Oracle salesperson to get the correct answers for your area. Perhaps you can swing a deal if your company already owns Oracle products. > (I welcome and appreciate that this forum is free and very helpful. > But there are times when one wants a voice on a phone while running > into issues...) There is also the vbox-devel list. I believe you will feel that posting your questions here will be almost as good as a voice on the phone. The web full of resources. Here are a few I bookmarked: http://www.mashkiatsair.com/lfl/virtualbox.html http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/ http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2076&sid=07dfcc4f2ad890cfdd4bc4ec8b098bf9&start=135 http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=15 http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=10 Many testers and collaborators also monitor these lists so, go ahead and give it a shot!. You won't regret it. In my humble opinion, it is the BEST hypervisor of them all and it pretty much gets better by the day! I'll never get tired of saying thanks to VBox developer team and to this community. -- Mario Lobo http://www.mallavoodoo.com.br FreeBSD since 2.2.8 [not Pro-Audio.... YET!!] (99% winfoes FREE) |

Hi Mario, I agree with you that VBox is the best. ;) A long while ago, I donated $100 US to Innotek for development. @Oracle: is there some avenue where us small fries can donate our appreciation? After all, Frank et. al. need to earn a living. ;) Cheers, -- Pablo Sanchez - Blueoak Database Engineering, Inc Ph: 819.459.1926 Fax: 760.860.5225 (US) |

Definitely. @Frank, if it's not too much burden, would you forward this thread to someone at Oracle? Please feel free to forward my contact information to them. @Everyone: I'll post back to the list what I find out. Also, periodically we could send a post to request donations. Say once every two months or so? We can chat about that later. Of course there'd be _no_ pressure to donate. Hey, don't go putting ideas into Oracle's head! The next thing you know, they'll be making us pay for it if they think they can get away with it! Seriously though, I always like to show my appreciation for a good product and am always prepared to buy/donate where I think it's appropriate. Just because I use free software doesn't necessarily make me a freetard. Don't forget most of he work is done by a team that have probably little to do with SUN or ORACLE, but much to do with the initial contributors Oracle don't have a good feeling on the FOSS world, I hope, this can change (do you read, Oracle?) and that Oracle could benefit much of such change :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr |

Indeed the team is very busy which is why his response was delayed. The long and short of it is, the team is already paid and cannot accept any additional payment. A `form' of payment which is super helpful to the team is for people to continue to test and equally important, to submit bugs via the bug tracker. Happy virtualizing!
