We should be storing them as a crpytographic hash, either MD5 or (preferably) SHA. > 3. The logo in the background: Our logo is looking a bit dated. We can select finalists if necessary and put it to a poll > if we want. Icon design is going toward vector graphics these days. If you look at a lot of the icon sets available for Gnome, e.g., you'll find that the "originals" are SVG which are rendered as bitmaps to make icon sets of various sizes (usually 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64?). The advantage here is that the artist doesn't have to create different icons for different target sizes. (A friend of mine who's a graphic designer made me a logo for Bones as SVG. You can see a version rendered to bitmap here: http://www.nomic.net/~test/flamingdice.png It's really nice to have it in a vector format, since I don't and can't know a priori at what size I want to display it.) I recognize that not everyone who might want to design an icon will already be using a vector drawing program, but getting the base art as a bitmap will reduce the long-term usefulness for us quite a lot. I'm not even sure what target sizes to ask for if we have people submit bitmaps. E.g, I think the icons in my menubar here at work are 32x32, but I could choose to display them at 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, or 64x64. I guess in that case we'd want a 64x64 bitmap, and then we'd scale it down for the other sizes? Also, I was thinking about aspect ratios: An icon should be 1:1, but the other thing, for a splash screen or about box or for the web page (?) should maybe be banner-ish in aspect. An icons site, lots of interesting stuff here: http://jimmac.musichall.cz/icons.php -- J. |
