There is another way to spot the umid, and that is to watch the boot
output for this:
mconsole (version 2) initialized on /home/jdike/.uml/fc6/mconsole

i realize that, and i'll add that as an aside. but since it involves
someone watching carefully for that to go by during boot, that's why i
opted for just running dmesg afterwards. i'll add the above, though.
