I didn't halt properly my uml and i got the following problem: EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended # fsck fsck: not found How come it didn't recognize fsck? # fsck.ext2 / e2fsck 1.10, 24-Apr-97 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 fsck.ext2: Is a directory while trying to open / It gave me the following advice: The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> What should i do about it? ____________________________________________________________ Watch a championship game with Elway or McGwire. Well, this really has little to do with UML, and alot to do with fsck. Anyhoo, you could prolly try mounting the rootfs and then copying a sane fsck.ext2 binary into it like so: mount -o loop root_fs /mnt/whatever then you could either try booting into UML again, or simply chroot the root_fs. Remount it read-only, and run another fsck. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ L. Friedman net...@li... Hello, I am trying to build UML on a different machine (running red-hat with gcc 2.96). I am using the 2.4.9 kernel with the appropriate patch. I get through these steps: make clean make mrproper make config ARCH=um make dep ARCH=um (though this command fails ocassionally with some weird seg fault errors) the final step: make linux arch=um does not seem to work.. I get: ---------------- module.c: In function `sys_delete_module': module.c:676: Internal error: Segmentation fault. Please submit a full bug report. See <URL:http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/> for instructions. make[2]: *** [module.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/UML/linux/kernel' make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/UML/linux/kernel' make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2 ---------------- I am wondering if it is a partitioning thing (quota stuff.. if so, how do i find out?) I built the same thing on another box and it worked just fine. -a ******************************************************************************* "He looked at the granite. I get: err.. the make dep ARCH=um seg faults ocassionally, finishes ocassionally.. the make linux ARCH-um fails at different points.. This might be due to the 2G/2G problem. But, how do i modify .config? I put in a line in .config that said: CONFIG_HOST_2G_2G=y but this doesnt come up when I say make config ARCH=um again.. so, i am not sure that this is taking any effect.. help! ******************************************************************************* "He looked at the granite. I get: ... host patch is needed to run uml, but shouldn't be needed to compile it. I would suspect the gcc 2.96. No such version exist. I would try gcc 3.2 (I have 3.2.1 on my debian system). Acoording to official gcc homepage, there is no version 2.96. AFAIK that version is RedHat specific buggy release. There is even no version 2.95.4, but that one is included in many distros. It seems newer than RedHats 2.96 and it won't compile kernels before 2.4.15 or some such (because they fixed a bug in gcc and revealed one in kernel). I would also try unpacking a clean tree, patching it with freshly downloaded patch and copy the .config in. Then rebuild. I have sometimes seen weired errors when something got messed up with repeated patching. > err.. the make dep ARCH=um seg faults ocassionally, finishes > ocassionally.. the make linux ARCH-um fails at different points.. You can't just add it. Have you replaced the # CONFIG_HOST_2G_2G is not set line with it? It's ignored by compiler, but I am not sure it's ignored by the config script. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jan 'Bulb' Hudec <bu...@uc...> |

I first thought you mean the ptrace one, but that is included since 2.2.14 IIRC. ^ So no, host does not have to be patched. Anyway, you described compilation problems and host kernel should not matter there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jan 'Bulb' Hudec <bu...@uc...> |

You can happily compile 3G/1G kernel on a 2G/2G host, but it won't run it. David -- David Coulson http://davidcoulson.net/ d...@vi... http://journal.davidcoulson.net/ |
