I've tried this, and failed. The UML serial line driver apparently
confuses pppd in some way that I haven't figured out.
There's no inherent reason it shouldn't work, just there needs to be
the proper support in the drivers.

If all you want is communication, hooking two UMLs two as you describe, and
have one of them run a getty, then you can log into it from the other.
