What was the UML exit status? Did it drop a core file?
Try using write(2, msg, strlen(msg)) instead of printk. I don't see how,
but it's possible that printk output is getting lost. That's the only thing
that makes any kind of sense to me, since I see no way for UML to exit there.
Also try stracing UML and sending in the output.
