Thanks for the hint!
I found out that its not a good idea to start the uml_switch as root...
Then my uml-instance cannot write to it.
Now it works!

Maybe it would be useful to have a -mode argument to allow you to set the
permissions on the control socket.
As it stands, all the UMLs talking to a switch, plus the switch itself,
probably have to run as the same user.

It's (or another one that sounds just like it :-) is on my list to be
integrated into uml_switch.
