If you are already running Red Hat, you really should try one of their 2.4.18 kernels. I'm personally running 2.4.18-5. The Red Hat kernels are much closer to -ac than the stock kernels, including stuff like rmap. They should give considerably better performance than vanilla 2.4.17. Besides, if you do have problems with a Red Hat kernel, they should get their kernel people on it ASAP. They ship UML with the current beta...
