So just a quick follow-up question. As a total non-expert (we're talking almost Ubuntu here) should I try this?

Even if the install goes off smoothly, I'm a bit worried about config (can't see any Xorg.conf examples in the documentation).

Currently running Openchrome with no problems but a spare screen standing idle.

It does, to some extent, but since this code does not implement
randr1.2s broken modesetting model, and further infrastructure has not
been developed inside the X framework, only a single X
screen/framebuffer gets initialised. The driver does allow for two
displays with different timing, to scan out the same part of
framebuffer.
