Sounds like you don't have hardware accellerated graphics working.

Do *any* OpenGL programs produce decent speed?

Assuming I'm right, you need to go to www.nvidia.com and download the
appropriate OpenGL drivers for Linux...follow all the installation
instructions and things should go much faster.
