Can I Open a Portion of a Large Group?

Hi:  Before I get to a current inquiree, we have a solution in a message I 
asked in January.  I submitted a Debian bug-and-the "maxint" problem was fixed, 
thanks to Colin Watson.
Now, just wondering in trn4.0 test77-2  if I can somehow  open a smaller 
portion of a larger binary group?  Ideally if I were able to only open 1million 
of a 3million article group, I could actually sort and save articles.  In pine 
there's a range command, but its not perfect.  In the trn4 man-page I notice 
references to a -k option?
As an example, I cannot open
34591925 in alt.binaries.classic.tv.shows
Yes a total number of articles are an issue, but I also suspect something about 
a maximum article number, because I have been able to open a 7million article 
group  but sometimes not a 3million group.
Please pass along ideas I can try in viewing larger groups.
