In modern versions of tmux, ESC doesn't quit copy mode like it did in GNU Screen.

CTRL+C exits copy mode, but CTRL+C in normal mode sends the deadly signal SIGINT. We don't want users to get into the habit of using such a dangerous key to exit copy mode. So we should teach them a better way.

Each time a user enters copy mode, please show them a message that teaches them the safe way to quit: "Copy mode (press <F1> for help or q to quit)."

<F1> help actually doesn't exist yet. Please see ticket [#48]: "If I press F1 in copy mode, show me a list of keybindings".

The remotepairprogramming.com blogger, and "demure" in Freenode #tmux, helped me write this feature request. I thank you both.

  • Escape should work. Are you using emacs or vi key bindings? Can you check for me if Escape is bound in the emacs-copy key table?

In tmux 1.3, Escape would take me out of copy mode, but ever since I upgraded to tmux 1.8, it no longer does so.

My $EDITOR is set to vim. Therefore, tmux 1.8 has automatically chosen vi keys. In my vi-copy key table, Escape is bound to "clear-selection".

On the other hand, the q key is universal. Whether you are in emacs-copy mode or vi-copy mode, it always lets you quit the mode.
