If wish is called and DISPLAY is not set (or set incorrectly), Tk_MainWindow returns an error message that looks like this:

Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationcouldn't connect to display "srv29:0.0"
Error in startup script: this isn't a Tk applicationcouldn't connect to display "srv29:0.0"
while executing
"load /usr/tcl84/lib/tk8.4g/../libtk8.4g.so Tk"
("package ifneeded" script)
invoked from within
"package require Tk "
(file "/ldatae/clearcase/upgrade7/MultiFig/n098/u10k/lib/MFigPGUI/main.tcl" line 2)
invoked from within
"source "$u10k/lib/MFigPGUI/main.tcl""
(file "/cas/bin/sun4/mfigp" line 39)

A colon at the end of "this isn't a Tk application" would make the error message slightly better.

I wonder, as well, if the message shouldn't be "this application couldn't instantiate Tk:" ...
