Any way TikiWiki can return a user-friendly error rather
than have PHP timeout and spit out an ugly msg?

You may find the install docs ( http://tikiwiki.org/InstallTiki )
for your system handy. It should help clear up some timeout
problems. Otherwise, please specify more specific
    information. Thanks.

fixed in 1.8. Setup a proxy in admin->general. Overall it's
better not to cache links if you don't need it.
