It happens quite often that the pdflatex compile process will not terminate.
E.g. you compile a node in a tikzpicture environment and forget to place a ";" at the end of a node definition.

Therefore a button to terminate the compile process is needed.

Here is a minimal example that will not terminate.
\usepackage{tikz}
...
\begin{tikzpicture}
\node{Hello World!}
\end{tikzpicture}

Discussion

  • Yes, a button could be useful, but it is not actually needed.

    You can press escape to cancel a running process (when it runs longer
    than 2 seconds).

    Oh, good to know. What if you add a message to the statusbar saying "hit escape to cancel"?

    Well, escape key just hide the log window on some of our students PC (TmX 2.1 on Windows).

  • Uncheck the "Close log-view with esc-key" (shortcuts).

    But a "shortcut explicit" would help avoid conflicts on some systems ..
