Is it possible to have TeXstudio recognize more than one speller at a time, for multi-lingual files? Thanks for your help!

Currently not. You can have only one speller per file.

If it's only one section in another language, you could extract it to a separate file and \input{} it. Use % !TeX spellcheck = [dict] to have TXS automatically choose the correct dictionary for the file. Currently this is a per file setting, but we might change it to setting the speller for the code to follow in the future.

It would be most useful to simply allow more than one dictionary to operate on an entire file and that this could be simpler (for the user, at least) than having commands triggering different dictionaries for different parts of the text.

    This could be through:
% !TeX spellcheck = [dict], [dict]

Or through an option in configuration.

Could this be done? Would it be helpful to have a specific feature request or is there already one for this feature?

There's a very similar feature request already. I've reposted your proposal there.

Everything can be done (almost) if there is time :). Thing is, that the whole system is currently laid out to handle only one dictionary at a time.

You can merge two dictionaries to create a hybrid dictionary matching both languages. See e.g. http://code.google.com/p/hunspell-merge/
