#184 Wrong memory reference

Tino Weinkauf

I am working on a Windows XP box with all the various
service pack installed. I use the last distribution of
MikTex. Latest version of Teknix center.

Yesterday the pdflatex processor stopped working: if I
asked the compiling of my tex file in .pdf the program
froze and I had to terminate it with the XP program
manager. I unistalled and reinstalled teknix center and
nothing changed. Only after rebooting the system the
pdflatex program started working again, meaning that
the uninstallation/reinstallation of teknix center was not

After that Teknix center has started to wrongly
reference memory, causing program termination and
data loss quite often. I uninstalled and reinstalled your
program, but the bug still remains. Is there any registry
key I can clean up in order to have your program to work
correctly again?

Thank you in advance.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ToolsCenter is the key, that you
might want to delete. There are all the preferences.

    But that
shouldn't be the problem. I work on XP and everything is fine with TXC.
    Some things:

Don't terminate TXC, but terminate pdflatex.exe
using your programm manager (Task Manager).

    There is a
known bug, that TXC crashes, if you do "Select All", "Copy & Paste".
Read the bug database for this.

Be sure, that you do NOT run TXC
in compatibility mode for Win95 or something similar. ==> Investigate
the properties of the shortcut, that you are using for starting TXC.

the problems persist, please give us more information. Especially we
need a way to reproduce the error.

Thank you for the fast answer.

I think the problem showed up itseld when I killed TXC
instead of pdflatex when pdflatex was not working.

However, the problem remains and, on my computer, it is
quite easy to reproduce. After rebooting the computer this
morning, I worked for more or less 8 hours without having any
problem. Five minutes ago the program crashed while I was
compiling the file (I have been working on all day) in .pdf. I
have restarted the program and tried to recompile. This time
the bug showed up at first compilation.

The message error it is giving me is:
    The instruction "0x77f52109" referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Opening the debugger, I got a message box telling me:
    Unhandled exception in TEXCNTR.EXE (NTDLL):
    0xC0000005: AccessViolation.

Now the problem woke up when I compiled and view the
result several times in a short time. Today I recompiled my
work not many times and almost never I asked for a preview
    in Acrobat Reader.

    I hope this help.

It is a pity because your tool TXC is very powerful but a
similar bug doesn't allow its use even it is a beta release.

    Thank you for now.

A correction to what previously written.

Today, I compiled the file several times, but almost never
asked for viewing it inside Acrobat Reader. Everything worked

Ten minutes ago, I compiled the file several time, requesting
each time a preview in AcroRead. The error came up and now
it verifies everytime I open TXC and request to compile.

    Author same as before...

Note. I've been working with TXC for two days without errors
compiling the file in postscript. The only errors and crashes I
had were due to turning on the pdf compiler. The tex file is
    the same.

    Author as before.

    I see. Hm. What now?

As I can not reproduce it:

    If the error
shows up, could you look using the task manager if pdftex.exe is
running? You should find that on the "Processes" or "Tasks" page of the
    Task Manager.

Ok. Never mind. I am sure that it is my windows installation
going crazy. I am not compiling in pdf any more and I plan to
reinstall the entire miktex distribution as soon as I have time.

If the error shows up again, I'll send you more detailed

    Thank you.
