We need a simple UI for changing the encoding of an open file. While it is nice that we can change it while saving, it would be way more intuitive to have a little icon in the status bar where one can click to change the format. A sub-menu of the file menu should be there as well (similar to SciTE).

This is the initial user report:

Every time I outsource files I stumble upon the missing support for UTF8 files. There's no option to choose the file encoding in general and even particular for the outsourced files. When using utf8 as file encoding for cross platform compatibility the missing support causes unnecessary errors. The only solution to this is to save the file as a new file with the same file name while choosing the appropriate file encoding in the dialog.

I suggest that an general option should be added and an separate option for each Save-dialog, too.

The described problem cannot be reproduced using the latest version of TeXnicCenter.

Dirk, can you please check again?

If I outsource a piece of text from a UTF-8 file, then this creates a UTF-8 file as well. Not sure, if this would solve all your issues, but some of it.

Are we talking about TXC 2.0?

Sorry for the (very) late response and reopening the ticket. Just forgot to respond...

I checked the problem and can confirm, that the outsourced text is saved as UTF-8. This is fine so far, but unfortunately this happens even when I outsource from an ANSI file. This recreates the above problem, only vice versa.

I can change the encoding if I choose "save as" and then choose the right encoding, but the initial saving step saves the document with a wrong encoding.

    I'm on TXC 2.0 beta 1 64 bit

Oh, and of course I fixed the issue with the outsourcing. The newly created file has now exactly the same encoding as the original one.
