The files pane includes bib files, but the links won't work unless the bib file is in the local directory. It is standard practice to have a general bib file stored on the search path but not in the same directory as the tex file. Please allow TXC to find these bib files.

I've just hit the same problem - migrating to XP and TeXnicCenter I find that my BibTeX directory effectively can't be used with TeXnicCenter.

My first thought to workaround this problem was to try XP filesystem shortcuts to the .bib files, but TeXnicCenter complained that the file could not be opened. Perhaps this is a different bug/RFE, but TeXnicCenter ought to resolve shortcuts.

The BibTeX search directory can be expanded by using the MiKTeX environment variable BIBINPUTS. This and other environment variables are briefly described in Chapter 8 of the MiKTeX manual.

The environment variable is set on XP in the usual way: right click on My Computer -> Properties, select the Advanced tab and click on the "Environment Variables" button at the bottom of the dialog. Add an environment variable "BIBINPUTS" with the additional path (or semicolon-delimited list of paths) for MiKTeX's BibTeX executable to search for .bib files.

There is apparently an alternate method, using the miktex.ini file, but I was unable to find an existing miktex.ini file in my MiKTeX tree(s) and so used the environment variable.

The feature has been added to the official feature list.

    Thank you for your report.
