A number of programs, most notably citation software,
support the use of a lyxpipe to automatically insert
content at the current location in a document. Both
lyx and kile are able to use lyxpipes, so it is as
close to being a standard method of editing an open
latex document in an external program as we currently
seem to have. As an alternative/supplement, WinEdt
apparently has some different mechanism to allow this &
so perhaps TeXnicCenter could copy them. Jabref is an
example of a program with the ability to use both methods.

Since the original request in 2004, JabRef has grown to offer one of the most extensive features for a GPL program for managing bibtex libraries. There is good possibility for synergy between JabRef and TXC if the former can push citations to the latter. It may be through lyx pipes or any other method, but, as long as the TXC developers can provide JabRef with a plugin to write to TXC, I see the use of TXC increasing significantly. I've used TXC for the past 5 years and I see the potential for a significant increase in end user productivity if this feature is implemented.

I also request that this feature be modded up in priority.
