Per discussion at http://lists.village.virginia.edu/pipermail/tei-council/2010/thread.html#11663 , it seems there was consensus to update the list of Council members in the Guidelines (and list of Council meetings) and possibly also say explicitly that ongoing development is carried out by the Council.

This sounds like a proposal for revision of the Preface to the Guidelines. Would someone like to propose a draft?

I am willing to do this but would appreciate guidance on where I might find lists of past Council members. I can dig through members' meeting minutes to find election results (was there a Council before the first members' meeting?), but if someone knows where I can find lists already in good shape, please let me know.

  • I would suggest the TEI-L archives. I am not aware of a decent source.

Previous to the members meeting archives, I'm not sure... Is there a list of previous council members in the Vault? Maybe this should be pointed a single page hanging off Council webpage which we then point to?

Kevin will produce sample list for inclusion in Guidelines; Martin will work on defining more general purpose TEI personbase

Lou can help Kevin reconstruct the past in case he can't find everything. Note that there was a Technical Review Committee which met once in Kingston, Ontario in 1997 (before the formation of the TEI-C).

Putting aside a "general purpose TEIpersonbase" for now, here are my proposed changes to http://www.tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/FM1.html :

    = Date format =

Change all date ranges to give two digits at end to avoid confusion (does "2002-3" mean 2002-2003 or 2002-2013?).

    = "Chair" section =

Rename this section to "Council Chair" to avoid confusion with Board chair. Add the following people:

    * 2008-11: Laurent Romary (Max Planck Digital Library / Inria Nancy & Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
    * 2012: James Cummings (University of Oxford)

= Sort out "Board Members" section =

The "Board Members:" section is confusing: it's not clear who was an ex-officio member based on being Chair of the TEI and who is a member appointed by the Board. I suggest splitting into two sections: "Board Chair" and "Members Appointed by the TEI Board".

Someone needs to figure out who should be in which list. In addition, Lou Burnard needs to be added. We need dates of service and affiliation(s) for his time.

    = "Elected Members" section =

Add or modify the following in each section:

    Elected Members:
    * 2011-12: Piotr Bański (University of Warsaw)
    * 2010-13: Brett Barney (University of Nebraska)
    * 2004-07: David Birnbaum (University of Pittsburgh)
    * 2008-13: Gabriel Bodard (King's College London)
    * 2008-09: Peter Boot (Huygens Institute for Netherlands History)
    * 2007-08: Tone Merete Bruvik (University of Bergen)
    * 2007-09: Arianna Ciula (King's College London / European Science Foundation)
    * 2005-12: James Cummings (University of Oxford)
    * 2002-07, 2010: Matthew Driscoll (University of Copenhagen)
    * 2010-13: Kevin Hawkins (University of Michigan)
    * 2010-13: Martin Holmes (University of Victoria)
    * 2010-11: Julianne Nyhan (University of Trier / University College London)
    * 2008-11: Elena Pierazzo (King's College London)
    * 2006-07, 2009-10: Dot Porter (University of Kentucky / Digital Humanities Observatory / Indiana University)
    * 2009-12: Sebastian Rahtz (University of Oxford)
    * 2002-07: Laurent Romary (Inria / CNRS / Max Planck Digital Library)
    * 2008-09, 2012-2013: Paul Schaffner (University of Michigan)
    * 2008-09: David Sewell (University of Virginia)
    * 2008-09: Manfred Thaller (University of Cologne)
    * 2005-08: John Walsh (Indiana University)
    * 2012-13: Rebecca Welzenbach (University of Michigan)
    * 2011-12: Stuart Yeates (New Zealand Electronic Text Centre)

(Alejandro Bia departed in 2006 before the end of his term (which went through December 2006). Did someone replace him who's not currently in FM1 or in the list above?)

= Additions to list of Council meetings =

    Revise this sentence:

In addition, the Council has held six two-day face-to-face meetings.

    to say

In addition, the Council has held many face-to-face meetings.

    Add the following:

    * National University of Ireland, Galway (2008)
    * Ecole Normale Supérieure, Lyon (2009)
    * Royal Irish Academy, Dublin (2010)
    * Big Ten Center, Chicago (2011)
    * Inria, Paris (2011)
    * University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2012)

    = Technical Review Committee =

A previous note in Sourceforge mentions adding a meeting of the Technical Review Committee. Since this happened before P5, it seems it should instead be added to http://www.tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/PREFS.html . On this page I see mention of "technical review meetings" in the early 1990s but no mention of the Kingston meeting. Is this the same committee? If so, it could be added there.

= Changes to other parts of the text =

    Change:

The TEI Editors, Lou Burnard (University of Oxford) and Syd Bauman (Brown University) serve ex officio on the Council and, as far as possible, on all Council workgroups.

    to:

From ____ to 2008 the TEI had two Editors, Lou Burnard (University of Oxford) and Syd Bauman (Brown University), who served ex officio on the Council and, as far as possible, on all Council workgroups.

Oh, one more thing. Revise these sentences:

The Chair of the TEI Board sits on the Technical Council, and the Board also nominates one other member to the Council. The other Council members are all elected by the Consortium membership, and serve periods of up to two years at a time. The Board nominates the Chair of the Technical Council from among its members.

    to

The Chair of the TEI Board sits on the Technical Council, and the Board appoints the Chaif of the Technical Council and one other member of the Council. Other Council members are all elected by the Consortium membership, and serve periods of up to two years at a time.

A bit of burrowing in my email archive reveals that minutes from a TRC meeting in Kingston in June 1997 once existed on the server at UIC, but no copy appears to have survived. The TRC was actually set up a year before this, with a meeting in Bergen in 1996. It set up a small "core committee" which met several times telephonically during 1996, and created (inter alia) the <ab> tag. Most of its papers survive: see www.tei-c.org/Vault/TRC/

I'm still not clear on whether the TRC is related to the "tecnical review meetings" that supposedly happened in the early 1990s. In any case, I now realize that http://www.tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/PREFS.html contains only prefaces from previous editions of the Guidelines, so it would be dishonest to edit this text to add to the historical record.

So while someone in Paris suggested adding the Kingston meeting to the Guidelines, I can't find an appropriate place to do so. FM1 is all about the development of P5, and PREFS is a historical record of previously published prefaces. I think anyone doing research can find out about this meeting in the Vault.

    (a) and (b) in my previous comment still need to be resolved.

In Ann Arbor, we decided not to add the Kingston meeting.
