During a TEI Council list discussion, Gabriel Board (re)opened a conversation about whether it would make sense to use "line begin" rather than "line break" as the natural-language expansion of <lb/>. Such a change would need to affect <cb> and <pb> as well. This would have no affect on the content models of these elements; it would simply reinforce the usage recommended in the Guidelines that these elements mark the start of objects, rather than being terminating separators.

Such a change would require revision of the Guidelines and other TEI documents to reflect the name change, along with corresponding changes in translations.

The text of the guidelines is quite explicit on this point. It says that lb, cb, and pb all mark a boundary or break point. It also says (in almost the same wording in each case) "By convention, the break point is placed at the beginning of the whatever-it-is". I think it would be wrong to change the meanings of these tags -- where you put them is explicitly labelled as a convention, not as a part of their meaning.

Lou's comment makes sense to me.

I'm closing this since there has been no further disagreement or comment.
