#3547 `make html` failure

The `make html` target fails
when the name of the toplevel
directory is something like
"8.5a5". There's a [glob] at
work that's not looking for
any directory name with "a"
in it.

Workaround with symlinks is easy.

I'll fix this, but only once we're not about to do a release.

this needs to be fixed before release, because
macosx/GNUmakefile runs 'make html' by default as part of
'make install', so a build from the release archive done by
    following macosx/README will fail...

the fix is trivial, committed to HEAD
