Adrian Basescu

DesiredBehavior:
When there will be 64 bit support in TclTk, since there is a
configuration switch --enable-64bit, but it is disabled while running
the configure script with the error -Not supported on this platform?
We have tried on HP-UX 11.00 - 64bit, Compaq Tru64 UNIX 4.0d and Solaris
7 on UltraSPARC.

Tcl actually does suport some (most?) 64 bit environments. That flag
is just improperly named. It is used on Solaris7 to get the solaris
compiler to use the 64bit mode (it uses 32 by default). Other compilers
(like gcc 2.95) often automatically assume 64 bits in a 64 bit env.
We should rename it --enable-sol-64bit or be better about the warning.

NB: some platforms (IRIX) can support 64-bit compilation and
normally work in 32-bit mode, but Tcl's configure script
does not support these in 8.2.1. Renaming the flag is *not*
a good idea; making the flag work on more platforms *is*. (I
think there are some other bugs/patches relating to this in
    the DB somewhere..?)

I don't think removing the flag is such a good idea.
On systems that need to be switched from 32 to 64
bit mode by hand, folks should use it. It could simply
be a no-op when used on systems that default to
64 bit mode. The current code seems to check for GCC
and error out saying 64 bit support is not available.
Perhaps we just need to check to see if gcc defaults
to 64 bits and print a warning if it does not.

The flag has been enabled on HP11 now, and the error
    message improved.
