That is not the point of view I'm looking at. Many big name hardware companies support/advocate UDI, so that is not a problem. The idea is to get the ball rolling and create another project that creates OSS/FS drivers for UDI. >From what I read from Stallman and Linus--they won't want put UDI in Linux/GNU. With a large body of up to date UDI drivers with source available, new startup OS wouldn't have to go through the trouble of reinventing the wheel, writing drivers all over again. A bunch of wasted time and effort. The idea is to establish an official UDI implementation early on... then wait for Syllable to gather market share.
