I am trying to find a command line utility which will just return a COUNT of the number of files of a particular type - Ie. The number of .XLS files stored on a PC.

SFK FF gives me a list, but I don't need that much information. Basically, I just need to identify if a user has large numbers of Office docs stored on their laptop, instead of securely on a server.

    try

    sfk dir . .xls +count

this also creates a list internally, but +count takes that list, counts the lines and then drops the content.
    a similar alternative might be

    sfk dir . .xls +filter "-+files,*dirs"
