Brief:
I can't playback nor import any audio files in sonic visualiser - the error message from the GUI can be found in the screenshot attached.

Sonic Visualiser v1.8 worked fine and I have tried both the packaged debian file on the website, here is the MD5sum:

I have also compiled the program from source and ran ./configure && make, it compiled just fine and the program runs fine but has the same problem has described. Namely, it can't find the audio playback which I assume is either ALSA directly or PulseAudio. Audio playback works fine on the computer using Rythmbox or Banshee and audio capture works fine in Audacity. I've tried purging and re-configuring sound by
