Hello Fabien and collegues, on IRC channel we got a potentially new developer, who has interest to develop DSS parts of Stellarium (we discussed about SDSS in a main talk) and he has interest to develop TOAST branch. In the current implementation this branch has some hardcoded parts of code. Fabien, what you can say about current DSS collection? Can we uses it in the development legally? If answer yes, then... how much space need for storing of the collection? Technically I can give some space on server in our university (he under my control). -- With best regards, Alexander |

As an interim step, I’d like to get the images. So how do I do this? Once I have them, and understand that, I can look into hosting options, and making the integration more robust. > On Dec 16, 2014, at 9:39 AM, Alexander Wolf <ale...@gm...> wrote: > > Hello Fabien and collegues, > > on IRC channel we got a potentially new developer, who has interest to develop DSS parts of Stellarium (we discussed about SDSS in a main talk) and he has interest to develop TOAST branch. > > In the current implementation this branch has some hardcoded parts of code. Hi Alex, currently only me have the full collection on my PC, I haven't uploaded it yet as it's quite large (70 Gb in jpeg). The last time I worked on it I created an intermediate script which pre-process the base images and ended up with something about 43 Gb. It's not something that can be used from Stellarium, it still needs some large processing to generate TOAST tiles. Beside the hosting issue, the main reason this project was not finished is that I still haven't managed to obtain images nice enough, there is a big color harmonization issue between each plates in certain regions. It's a tricky issue, but it would be great if someone has time to work on that! The processing scripts and tools are located in the toast branch ( https://code.launchpad.net/~stellarium/stellarium/toastImages), but I need to update them to reflect the last version (I worked without version control, shame on me!); Also they are not documented. If someone is interested, I'll try to push everything I have ASAP. For the data, if someone has a server I can try to upload the intermediate data (42Gb) from my slow connection. On the legal aspect, some years ago, I got the authorization from the various DSS owners to use it in Stellarium, but it's unfortunately not an open license, so we are not allowed to use it for other purposes. I’m interested. Will the scripts you refer to recreate the 42Gb worth of images? > On Dec 21, 2014, at 8:39 AM, Fabien Chéreau <fab...@gm...> wrote: > > Hi Alex, > > currently only me have the full collection on my PC, I haven't uploaded it yet as it's quite large (70 Gb in jpeg).
