the fromLocal8Bit changes did not help the mac, indeed the mac build

plan to collect all those places where Fabien put in fromLocal8Bit to
a single function where it is easier to change platform to platform.

Mmm.. I still think that it could be easier to move to QString right now.  It should not be that hard.

on a different subject: versions of operating systems:

i'd like to propose that i make a 10.4+ Universal build of Stellarium,
and then a 10.3 PPC build differently.  my reasoning is this:  to make
a 10.3 Universal build, a lot of extra libraries not present in the
system, or not of the right version, have to be bundled in, compiled
special.  this makes the build very large to get all things in just
for the 10.3's benefit.  the 10.4 only build is relatively smaller and
can rely on system libraries more.

Well you know what to do. Although it would be much better to have only one .dmg... What is the difference of size between a  universal build 10.3 and 10.4?

but i know we ship just one windows build, and that it seems to be at
least workable on win98.  is there a guiding principle for this, or
just accident?

On windows, all the non standard libraries are shipped with the installer binary. All the windows-specific functions calls were chosen so that it works on all windows versions (in theory).
