    Hi,
    Happy "IAY 2009" to everybody.
    I am a new user of Stellarium. I was looking for such software and at last I got it as I wanted. Many many thanks and good wishesto it's developers.

    But I am wondered, I could not found any comet. I think there exists some comets whose orbits are accurately calculated and they can be included. I am particulary interested now for the Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3). Can anyone please comment?

      Hi Rahman

      Comets can be added to Stellarium by editing the ssystem.ini file in the data folder. The wiki has a section with some comets that can be added. Read the instructions first. I made a set of orbital parameters for that comet a couple of days ago.

      Add this section to the end of the ssystem.ini file. Be careful to get the syntax right else the program will crash. Search for it as C/2007 N3

        The reason we don't include a lot of comets by default, is that we don't have a good way to render them at the moment. Ideally we'd like to have some sort of "realistic" way to render them with a head, tail(s) etc. Until now we didn't get round to that.

        We could really do with the help of a good OpenGL/games programmer who could help us make an efficient but good looking rendering. Once that is done, it would be nice to have a selection of bright comets in the program, and a convenient method to update/add new comets as they are discovered (e.g. some sort of online update tool).

        These things are for the future however.

    Hi

    There is quite a lot of data on comets and other solar system objects in the
    stellarium wiki. However calculation of solar system objects is quite a CPU
    intensive task and a ssystem.ini file larger than about 19KB will slow the fps
    considerably.
    So do not try to load them all at once.
