OpenSSI 0.9.96 (the second RH9-based release) has some enhancements, bug fixes and new documentation. It can be downloaded from OpenSSI.org. A six-page introduction document is included. It provides a good overview of the features of openSSI, and is divided up into a variety of topics, such as filesystems, the cluster process model, and system management. There is now much better support for running X Windows on each node of the cluster. This includes bug fixes to clusterwide Unix domain sockets, and some changes suggested by John Hughes to allow X to run as a non-root user. A new localview command allows programs like ps or top to limit their scope to just those processes running on the local machine. Support for machines with more than 1 GB of RAM is included. Previously, processes could not migrate on these machines. A faster cluster shutdown has been introduced. Nodes that are kicked out of the cluster are now automatically rebooted. The ksync command has been renamed to ssi-ksync to avoid conflict with a KDE command of the same name. There's a new --modulefile argument to mkinitrd, for specifying alternatives to /etc/modules.conf. Debugging support for process load-levelling has been added. The interface is /proc/cluster/loadlog. Support for the cciss driver has been added to devfsd. The ida symlinks have been fixed. Various process-related bugs have been fixed. Process loadlevelling works correctly for large program names. Processes with a large number of file descriptors can migrate without panicing a node. When a process is stopped with Ctrl-Z, its parent is woken up. Races between delivering signals and reaping children have been resolved. All processes in a thread group are signalled, like they should be. A deadlock in release_task() has been fixed. Defunct clone processes are properly cleaned up. Other bugs fixes include IPC shared memory locking, potential memory corruption when accessing remote objects, and various high-stress bugs. Again, OpenSSI 0.9.96 can be downloaded from OpenSSI.org. Enjoy, Brian |

This change: Index: openssi/openssi-tools/sysadmin/ksync-network =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/ssic-linux/openssi/openssi-tools/sysadmin/ksync-network,v retrieving revision 1.4 retrieving revision 1.5 diff -r1.4 -r1.5 62c62 < mknbi-linux --rootdir=/dev/ram0 --append='init=/linuxrc' \ --- > mkelf-linux --rootdir=/dev/ram0 --append='init=/linuxrc' \ breaks my etherboot 5.2.2 "rom" (diskette). It just hangs after loading the image. What could be wrong? |

When I ran mkelf-linux with an OpenSSI kernel and a base ramdisk, it booted okay until it got to the ramdisk phase. For now I'd suggest editing /sbin/ssi-ksync-network and replacing mkelf-linux with mknbi-linux. Jai, I remember you were having problems last weekend booting the second node of your cluster with Etherboot. I don't think you told me what the solution was. Did it have anything to do with this problem? Brian |

The Etherboot project has released a new version of mknbi that's supposed to fix this problem that John reported: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/etherboot/mknbi-1.4.3-1.noarch.rpm Can someone try it out and confirm that it works? Thanks, Brian John Hughes wrote: > Brian J. Watson wrote: > >> OpenSSI 0.9.96 (the second RH9-based release) has some enhancements, bug >> fixes and new documentation.
