When I try to open mesages in the Inbox I get the following fatal error
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in
/var/www/html/squirrelmail-1.4.5/src/read_body.php on line 98
This effectively means I can only open newly received messages but not old
ones-even had difficulty sending to squirrelmail!
Not sure if problem is with OS, server (my-ihost) or wit the program, so
should appreciate some help & advice on how to rectify this.

Problem is with PHP 4.4.1.
SquirrelMail and PHP 4.4.1 issues
PHP developers released PHP 4.4.1 version on 2005-10-31. Security fixes
introduced bug, which affects three SquirrelMail functions. If your
SquirrelMail install does not use server side sorting, PHP bug can create
infinite loop in message display. If you are using PHP 4.4.1, you should
update it to 4.4.x-dev or apply patch.
Same issue applies to some Gentoo PHP 4.4.0-x packages. PHP developers
promised to release 4.4.2 more than month ago. They are the ones that keep
hosed version on download page and ask to upgrade to it without any
notices about broken prev/next/mb_mime_encodeheader functions.
Enable server side sorting (4. General Options -> 11. Allow server side
sorting) or fix PHP. Issue can be fixed by modifing SquirrelMail scripts,
but if we stop using code that is broken in some php version, we should
stop using php. If your server does not support server side sorting and
you can't fix php, check SquirrelMail bug tracker. Bug No. 1390982
