Try the above suggestion. If that isn't what you need, you have to
show how you've configured SM so far along with all other system
specifications. Please READ the mailing list posting guidelines

That option allows to configure global file based address book. It is not
related to custom address book backends.
SquirrelMail has example plugin, which shows how to create custom address
book backend. Plus address book classes are documented in phpdoc.
