Squirrelmail uses IMAP not just for authentication but also to retrieve
the actual stored messages.  Having an IMAP Server is a must for
Squirrelmail.  Use an IMAP Server like Courier-IMAP (
http://www.courier-mta.org ) that supports LDAP Authentication.

Unclear what you mean here.  If your IMAP Server is configured to
authenticate against LDAP, then only LDAP users will be able to login.
